Beni Ourain Rugs
Beni Ourain rugs from the El Abbassi family workshops in Morocco's Rabat-Salé region, in classic ivory or in bold color, woven to the size your room needs. Each one follows a tradition named for the Amazigh tribes of the Middle Atlas: soft wool, a generous pile and geometry drawn freehand.

What is a Beni Ourain rug?
Beni Ourain rugs take their name from the Amazigh tribes of Morocco's Middle Atlas, who wove them for their own homes: a thick, soft wool pile on a natural ivory ground, crossed with dark lines, diamonds and lattices drawn freehand rather than copied from a chart. Modernist designers took them up in the twentieth century, and the look still sits easily in clean-lined rooms.
"Beni Ourain" names the tradition, not the place a rug is made. Ours are made in the El Abbassi family workshops in Morocco's Rabat-Salé region, in that tradition.
What you'll find in this collection
- Classic ivory: a natural ivory ground with black or brown diamonds, lines and grids — the Beni Ourain most people picture.
- Color in the same tradition: blue, rust, pink, green, gold and more, in stripes, checks and freer abstract designs.
- Hand-knotted on a loom: every knot is tied by hand, which gives a dense pile built to last for decades. Some designs add raised areas of pile or flat-woven lines to the pattern.
Each rug's page says whether its pile is medium or thick.
Choosing the size
- 5x8 ft: under a coffee table, or at the foot of a queen bed.
- 8x10 ft: most living rooms, with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug.
- 9x12 ft and larger: large living rooms and dining tables.
- Runners: hallways, kitchens and the side of a bed.

How we make yours
A made-to-order rug is woven in 15–20 days in our family workshops in the Rabat-Salé region, then standard shipping takes 7–14 business days to every destination. A rug already in stock ships within 1–3 business days. Shipping is free on every order and already included in the price.
Because every rug is made by hand, small differences in pattern and color from the photos are the mark of handwork, not a flaw.
Caring for a Beni Ourain rug
- Vacuum regularly without a beater bar; a new wool rug sheds a little at first, and that settles.
- Blot spills straight away with cold water and a little mild soap — never rub.
- Turn the rug every few months so it wears and fades evenly.
- Have it professionally cleaned about once a year.
- Ivory wool mellows toward a warm cream with time; that patina is part of its character.
