What is a Beni Ourain rug?

Beni Ourain rugs are handwoven by Amazigh tribes in Morocco's Middle Atlas mountains, where sheep graze at high altitude and grow some of the softest, most lanolin-rich wool in North Africa. The wool is left undyed, so every rug keeps the natural ivory of the fleece, crossed with lines and diamonds knotted in black and deep brown wool.

The patterns are never printed or copied from a chart. Each weaver improvises as she works, knotting in symbols passed down through her family — protection for the home, fertility, the mountains themselves. That is why no two authentic Beni Ourain rugs are ever alike.

Why they work in modern homes

Beni Ourain rugs were embraced by modernist designers as early as the 1930s, and the reason still holds: a calm ivory field with a few dark geometric lines complements clean-lined furniture without competing with it. The thick pile adds warmth and softness to minimalist rooms that can otherwise feel austere. They are equally at home in Scandinavian, contemporary, and bohemian interiors.

How to choose yours

• Go larger than you think: a Beni Ourain works best when the front legs of your furniture sit on the rug
• The pile is plush and dense — ideal for bedrooms and living rooms where comfort matters
• Look closely at the back: visible hand-tied knots and slight irregularities are signs of authentic tribal weaving
• Ivory wool mellows to a warm cream with age — this patina is prized, not a flaw

Every Beni Ourain rug at Zarabify is handwoven from undyed Atlas wool and finished in our family workshop in Salé. If you need a size you don't see, we weave custom dimensions to order.
