Woven to order by Amazigh (Berber) women in the El Abbassi family workshops in Morocco's Rabat-Salé region, each rug is a true hand-knotted piece worked at a medium-to-high knot count. The cream base shows between the squares like grout between tiles, and both ends are finished with an ivory hand-braided wool fringe. The wool is some of the finest in Morocco: long, lustrous fibres spun from live sheep's wool and coloured with organic dyes drawn from local plants and spices. Natural lanolin makes the pile — a dense, springy medium height of roughly 2 cm — stain-resistant and built to be passed down for generations. As a checkered rug it slips easily into Scandinavian, minimalist and farmhouse rooms.
