This 8x10 rug in warm burnt orange is a handmade Berber wool carpet whose raised shag squares turn a single terracotta colour into rich, tactile pattern. Where four square tufts meet, a tiny ivory dot is knotted in by hand, so from a doorway the rug reads as a warm terracotta field and up close it becomes a grid you can feel beneath your fingers. Each piece is hand-knotted by the El Abbassi family in their workshops in Morocco's Rabat-Sale region, worked by skilled Amazigh (Berber) artisans in the Beni Ourain weaving tradition. Tied on an upright loom at roughly 10 to 16 knots per square inch, then washed and sun-dried, that knot density is what holds the square blocks square and keeps the shag standing proud. Hand-braided ivory tassels finish both ends. Woven from 100% natural Moroccan wool, the pile is a dense luxury shag about two centimetres high, plush and soft underfoot yet hard-wearing. Because every ivory dot is placed by hand, the pattern varies gently from rug to rug, the mark of authentic handmade Berber craft. A single warm colour makes this the easiest kind of statement piece: it brings heat to a pale room without adding competing pattern.
